Visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha from Kyoto Station is very easy, even if it is your first time in Japan. The fastest and simplest route is by JR train, and the journey takes only around 10–15 minutes in total.
Step 1: Head to Kyoto Station Central Gate (Karasuma Side)

First, make your way to Kyoto Station Central Gate.
This is the main entrance on the north side of the station, also called the Karasuma Side. You will know you are in the right place when you see Kyoto Tower outside the station.
If you arrive by Shinkansen, you may exit near the Hachijo Side (South Exit). From there, simply follow the station signs for:
Central Gate / JR Lines
Kyoto Station has excellent English signage, so it is easy to navigate.
Step 2: Follow Signs for JR Nara Line
Once inside the main station area, look up for signs that say:
JR Nara Line
Follow those signs toward Platforms 8, 9, or 10.
Do not worry—Kyoto Station is large, but signs are clear and available in English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
Travel tip: If you are carrying luggage, use elevators rather than stairs. Kyoto Station is very luggage-friendly.
Step 3: Take a Local Train to Inari Station
Board a Local train on the JR Nara Line.
Important:
Take Local / All Stops trains only
Do not board Rapid trains unless the display clearly shows Inari Station as a stop.
The ride is short:
Kyoto Station → Tofukuji → Inari Station
Travel time: about 5 minutes
Fare: very affordable
You can use:
- ICOCA
- Suica
- PASMO
- JR Pass
No special ticket is needed.
Step 4: Exit Inari Station
When you arrive at Inari Station, leave through the station exit.
The entrance to Fushimi Inari Taisha is directly in front of you.
Walking time: about 1 minute
You will immediately see the famous red torii gates.
It is almost impossible to get lost.
Best Time to Visit

Helpful Tips for International Travelers
Large luggage?
Use coin lockers at Kyoto Station before going. Walking through the torii gates with suitcases is difficult.
Traveling with kids?
The main shrine area is family-friendly.
However, the mountain trail has many stairs.
Wheelchair / stroller access?
The main shrine grounds are accessible, but the full mountain route is steep and stair-heavy.
Want fewer crowds?
Visit:
- early morning
- late evening
- rainy days
These are excellent times for quiet photos.
Best photo tip
Walk about 15–20 minutes beyond the first torii tunnel.
Most tourists stop near the entrance, but deeper inside you will find quieter and more magical photo spots.
Bonus: Combine It with Nearby Attractions
After visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, consider visiting:
- Tofuku-ji (beautiful Zen temple)
- Kiyomizu-dera (iconic Kyoto temple)
- Gion (traditional Kyoto streets)
This makes a perfect half-day Kyoto itinerary.
